Every neighborhood has a handful of places that become part of its rhythm - the coffee shop where the same regulars show up every morning, the corner spot where the owner knows your order before you say it. Miami Shores and the surrounding communities are getting one of those places, and it's called Dinner Is Served.
We opened at 1001 NW 95th Street with a simple idea: bring real Caribbean, Latin, and American cooking to a neighborhood that deserves better than another chain restaurant, Monday through Saturday from breakfast through dinner. This isn't a concept built in a boardroom. It's a family-owned kitchen, built by people who grew up on these flavors and wanted to share them with the community around them.
Family-Owned, From the Ground Up
There's a difference between a restaurant run by a corporation and one run by a family, and it shows up in small ways you notice over time. It's in the seasoning that tastes a little different because it's someone's actual recipe, not a standardized formula sent down from a regional office. It's in the way the person taking your order remembers you the second time you come in.
Dinner Is Served is family-owned, and that shapes everything about how we operate. Decisions get made by people who live in this community, not executives evaluating spreadsheets from somewhere else. When something isn't working, we hear about it directly and we fix it directly. When a regular customer has a favorite dish, we know it, and we make sure it's ready the way they like it. That kind of relationship is hard to manufacture, and it's the whole reason we wanted to open here in the first place.
Being family-owned also means the food isn't standardized in the way a franchise menu often is. A lot of chain restaurants operate from a central playbook, where every location follows the same script down to the exact seasoning ratio, all in the name of consistency across hundreds of stores. That approach has its place, but it also strips out the personality that makes a dish feel like it came from somewhere real. Our recipes come from real family kitchens, adjusted and perfected over years, not focus-tested by a corporate test kitchen hundreds of miles away.
Miami Flavor, Done Right
Miami is one of the most flavorful cities in the country, and it's not because of any one cuisine - it's because so many different food traditions live here side by side. Caribbean cooking, Latin American classics, and American comfort food all show up at the same table in this city, and that's exactly what we wanted to capture on our menu.
You'll find dishes like marinated fried pork griot, oxtail stew, and whole snapper alongside Cuban-style grilled chicken, ground beef picadillo, and classic American sides like fries and green beans. It's not fusion for the sake of novelty. It's just an honest reflection of what people in this part of Miami actually grew up eating, brought together under one roof. Whether you want something deeply traditional or something a little more familiar, there's a place for you on our menu.
We also carry dishes that don't show up on every Caribbean menu around the city, like shrimp Creole, pork stew ragout, and bouillon - a traditional Caribbean vegetable and meat soup that's the kind of dish people grow up eating at home but rarely find at a restaurant. Having those dishes on the menu matters to us, because it means someone who grew up with this food can walk in and find something that actually tastes like home, not a watered-down version made for a broader audience.
A Menu That Covers the Whole Day
One of the things that sets Dinner Is Served apart from a typical neighborhood spot is how much ground our menu covers. We're not just a lunch place or a dinner destination - we're open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 10 PM, with a full breakfast menu, café options, hearty entrées, sandwiches, and desserts.
That matters more than it might seem at first. A neighborhood restaurant that only does one meal well is a place you visit occasionally. A restaurant that does breakfast, lunch, and dinner well is a place that becomes part of your week. Maybe it's breakfast on your way to work on Tuesday, a quick lunch pickup on Thursday, and a family dinner on Saturday. We built the menu, the hours, and the whole operation to support that kind of regular, everyday relationship with the neighborhood.
Our entrées come with a choice of two sides - fried plantains, sweet plantains, boiled yuca, rice and black beans, mixed rice and red beans, or classic options like French fries, corn, and green beans - so every meal can be built around what you're actually in the mood for. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of flexibility that makes a menu feel like it was designed for real people eating real meals, not just for a photo on a website.
Becoming Part of the Neighborhood
Miami Shores, Biscayne Park, El Portal, and the surrounding communities have their own identity, and we didn't want to open a restaurant that felt like it was dropped in from somewhere else. Part of what it means to be a neighborhood restaurant is showing up - for local events, for families celebrating something special, for the office down the street ordering lunch for a team meeting, and for the hospital staff at North Shore Medical Center just minutes away who need a real meal on a short break.
We're still new here, and we know that trust with a neighborhood is built one meal at a time, not with a single opening announcement. That means being consistent - the same quality on a random Tuesday as on a Saturday night, the same warm welcome whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth. It also means listening. If there's a dish you wish we carried, a side you want added, or feedback on how we can serve this community better, we want to hear it directly, not through a corporate feedback form that goes nowhere.
That kind of trust also runs both ways. Supporting a local, family-owned restaurant keeps money circulating in the neighborhood instead of flowing out to a corporate headquarters somewhere else. Every meal ordered here supports local jobs, local suppliers, and a business that's invested in this specific stretch of Miami, not a franchise fee sent up the chain. It's a small thing on any single visit, but it adds up over time into the kind of neighborhood identity that makes a place worth living in.
Built for Every Kind of Visit
Not every visit to a neighborhood restaurant looks the same, and we've tried to make sure Dinner Is Served works whichever way you need it to. Sit-down meals for families are a big part of what we do, but so is quick takeout for someone on a lunch break, call-ahead orders for people who don't have time to wait, and online ordering for anyone who wants their food ready the moment they walk in.
We're also building out catering, because a lot of the moments that matter most in a neighborhood - birthday parties, office lunches, school events, holiday gatherings - need food that can scale up without losing quality. More on that is coming soon, but it's part of the same idea: whatever the occasion, whatever the day, Dinner Is Served should be a restaurant you can count on.
Even the small logistical details are built around making regular visits easy. Ordering direct through our website or by phone means you skip the markups that come with third-party delivery apps, and it means your order gets to our kitchen exactly as you placed it. For a neighborhood restaurant, that reliability matters just as much as the food itself - people come back to places they can count on, not just places with a good dish once.
A Long-Term Investment in the Neighborhood
Opening a restaurant is a long-term commitment, not a short-term promotion, and we think about our place in this neighborhood the same way. That means investing in relationships that pay off over years, not just the next quarter - regulars who become friends, local partnerships that grow over time, and a reputation built on consistency rather than a single good review.
We know that earning that kind of standing takes time, and we're prepared to put in the work. Every meal served, every event catered, and every interaction at the counter is part of building toward being the kind of restaurant this neighborhood can rely on for years to come.
